ABOUT THE COFFE

Quote Stones Throw: “A few months ago an email came to us asking, “hey, do you guys like coffee?”

In what seemed like moments after the obvious reply, “yes,” a box arrived containing several bags of Intelligentsia’s finest, freshly roasted & Burr-ground.* They were labeled Stones Throw Blend, Quasimoto Blend, Madlib Blend and Peanut Butter Wolf Blend.

Madlib got a bag of espresso, and not long afterwards finished 15 new beat tapes. Coincidence? You be the judge. Needless to say a friendship was formed.

Intelligentsia is like the Stones Throw of coffee roasters. They do their homework, deal directly with their farmers (bettering hundreds of lives in the process of getting those Arabica beans to their Chicago and East L.A. Roasting facilities), and churn out seasonal blends and single-estate offerings like we hock 7s and CDs. They even have a single-estate espresso. That’s the coffee equivalent of compiling Bruce Haack’s vocoder work onto one CD. (We’re doing that next.)

At Stones Throw’s show in Chicago on April 30, and a few other locations on the tour, we’ll have a few bags of Intelligentsia’s custom-made Stones Throw House Blend. Want some? Check out the merch table. Buy something. Ask about the coffee. We’ll see what’s up.

I’ve been waiting for a good excuse to do a Kris Vanassche post and à cause des garçons de Justice, the perfect opportunity has popped up.

I’ve been a fan of Kris’ work for Dior ever since the first collection. It got a huuuuge amount of bad press and negative yammering on the fashion blogs; but you can put that down to post-HediSlimane withdrawal syndrome. Fact is, Kris’ silhouettes are second to none. It wasn’t until the new S/S09 collection that he perfected the cut, though. Most men’s collections are using the same ol’ same ol’ looks or going all out for unwearable fabrics but this collection is something I could wear every single day. Here are some of my favourite looks + the shoes that will be ripped off by every single high street brand for the next two years.

However, the real excuse for posting this (merely pointing out great collections is something for the folks at Style.com) is the Dior Homme catwalk soundtrack, mixed and produced by Justice. (As you know, we have a bit of a CATWALK SOUNDTRACK tradition here.) It even has some new material in the mix. Which is nice.

Highly Recommended…

South Rakkas is all the fun of dancehall, without the gay bashing and with added Diplo savvy. Bass, handclaps, mashups and Canadian rastas. What more do you want? Maybe a pony. A Canadian rasta pony. Why can’t I get that? Anyway, the Rakkas are releasing a new mix comp called ‘Mad Again’ and to hype it up Mad Decent released the mp3 of a Japan-only mix of practically all their riddim tracks. It doesn’t have Canadian rasta ponies, but it does have lots of car horns, gunfire, the Like a Virgin riddim and Japanese dancehall shoutouts.
