“Long Gone”, a shameless belter from “1997″, the free ‘internet album’ by Terius ‘The Dream’ Nash  gets the video treatment. It’s mostly black and white posing with some girl and her cleavage. But it’s also a perfect excuse to profess my love for the entire album. The Dream wrote ‘Single Ladies’ and ‘Umbrella’ and regular lurkers and copy/pasters of this site already know how essential we deem his mixtapes to be. Everyone who says they love The Weeknd and don’t like The Dream needs to shut the hell up. Seriously.

As our (occasionally long-winded but always) observant friends from Pitchfork have already pointed out: there’s a lot of similarities between 1977 and ’808 and Heartbreak’ by Kanye West. Both plunge deep into the pains of love, bitter failure, stardom, sadness and generally losing your shit in public. Both lean towards pompous artwork and detailed, no-holds-barred lyrics. Both are in high rotation at the KNOTORYUS offices. Courageous shit. Anthems.

How did you spend your year since the first Drankenstein mix gave some of the dirtiest, southest rappers of all time a purple nurple they would never forget? I spent it mostly guzzling up new skills, greedier than Lil’ Tunechi on a relapse sizzurp bender, and collecting gems from the brain of the dragon. Sometimes I had one foot in the blender, but you know: you ain’t shit if you ain’t never been screwed up.

Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who professed his love for the debut mixtape by The Weeknd, as the entire world music press subsequently toppled over each other to declare ‘House of Balloons’ ‘album of the year’. It was very kind of him (them) to drop me a present upon my return from eating Brie cheese by the pool for two weeks (stanky but fun- as holidays are supposed to be): the second official The Weeknd mixtape called ‘Thursday’. So now Thursday isn’t just the new Saturday anymore. It’s also the new edge of 21st century music. Drake makes a welcome appearance, bleeps, grinds and general depressive degeneracy abounds, now with some reggae and dub thrown in for good measure. You know what to do.

If you don’t think Ghostface is one the greatest MC’s of all time, I will fight you.

Ghostface Killah is the Vladimir Nabokov of rap. Who else writes lyrics like these:

“Swing the John McEnroe, rap rock’n'roll Tidy Bowl, gung-ho pro, Starsky with the gumsole”

or makes you think this is an actual sentence:

“Scooby snack jurassic plastic gas booby trap”

Listening to Ghostface Killah lyrics is like watching rainbows form in the sky or butterflies emerge from pupa. I don’t understand how it happens. I don’t know why it makes me happy. But it does.

Instead of rapping about chains, he talks about “lampin’ on the throne in a King Tut hat”. And don’t get me started on his attention to detail when it comes to storytelling:

“A live gunslinger well known, born to dance
When the heat is on, Stapleton days, shoot hisself in the groin
The gun went off, it looked like a flick
When he fell to the floor, holdin his nuts, screamin “God damnit
Shit I put one in my balls, what the fuck y’all lookin at me for?

Awesome.

Anyway, this mixtape by Max Tannone blends Ghost lyrics with vintage African funk. I really like it. It’s the Lolita of Mixtapes! Not really. But it’s good. You should listen.

Just when you thought official Lil’ Tunafish mixtapes were about to be extinct: here’s the bait for Tha Carter iv. Say what you will, when Wayne gets to cruise missile speed, he still goes hard (for your face, like Oil of Olay) while the rest go figure. OK, enough with the half-assed quotes.
