As I reported a while ago, the Antwerp Fashion Museum is hosting the very first Walter Van Beirendonck retrospective ever.

The exhib covers over 30 years of design gems…

What did I like the most?

Well, I almost teared up when I saw a couple of W&LT throwback pieces that I used to work really hard for to be able to afford.

I loved The Nick Knight/SHOWstudio room => must-see.

Later on we bumped into the intern that got to dust off his 600+ toys. I bet she would so do it again though.

Leave it to Walter Van Beirendonck to unapologeticaly fill a Parisian catwalk with models that are exclusively from African descent.

Some of the comments on Hypebeast made me laugh : “That dude killed thr grouch though and rocked him”. (sic)

Personally I am yet again touched and inspired by this beautiful collection. Those nifty cape-shirts and poncho’s, those perfectly tailored yet quirky chic suits, the handsome shoes + special shout out to the hair & make-up dept!

LGF and I were invited to watch Show 2010, the graduation show of the Antwerp Fashion Academy front row.

Impressive…

I think we all know Show 2009 was going to be a tough one to follow, what with alumni such as a.o. Elise Gettliffe and Emily Pirlot who got kicked into world fame when Gaga and Beyoncé sported two of her looks in their  “Telephone” video.

We were extremely entertained and saw some great work.

Who was first? The academy’s Head Master and his oversized headphones or Judith Thomas (“Kind, zieh dich warm an” 4th year) and her big ear muffs?

Bygones.

LGF and I want to see Michael Kampe’s “Exploded View” denim in stores next season. Could somebody make that happen please?

LGF and I were invited to Show 2009 : the annual show presenting the work from all the students of the fashion department of Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts. You know, it’s that little school that spawned (a.o.) Walter Van Beirendonck, Martin Margiela, Dries Van Noten, Dirk Van Saene and a lot of other incredibly talented designers…

Last show we shot with this little camera. We’ll be fully lensed in a couple of days.

After the show (which went amazingly smooth and those models had to workworkwork) we were allowed to take a look backstage. I love backstages when they’re all abandoned.

He is -amongst a lot of other things- the original high end sneaker designer.

No disrespect, but he was headlining this thing long before Lanvin, Kris Van Assche, Marc Jacobs & Louie V. 

So I’ll be wearing these. Because I know how his shoes fit.

How his clothes fit.

(Walter was also one of the first couture designers to start affordable lines for youngsters. And I mean affordable as in cheaper than Miu Miu & Marc by Marc Jacobs).

My vintage W.&L.T. and  æstheticterrorists pieces are stacked archived in my mom’s attic.

Fluo orange & green lightning bolts on the best denim jackets, one-sleeved shirts & knitwear, handbags and the best sneakers.

Sneakers as in (this was 1996-7-8 people) black and army green high tops on a fluo orange sole, white high tops on a glow-in-the-dark sole, white sneakers with beaks on a red sole.

I’m so glad he’s back at it.

When in Antwerp, visit his beautiful shop -he is one of the busiest men in fashion (he heads the Antwerp Design School + Scapa Sports + designs Lil KNOTORYUS’ wardrobe + concocts his own line) – but you will still often find him at the W.A.L.T.E.R. store, eager to help out.

It’s good to have a gorge blond intern named Candy.  She returned to the Paper Fashion exhibit to snap some pics & buy the book. Get a taste after the jump & don’t forget to visit.

Yesterday we went to see the new exhibit at the MoMu in Antwerp…

It is called Paper Fashion!

And it was really really good.

We were baffled by the dopeness of some of the advertising. (it was the 1960′s!)

The Anna Piaggi inspired dress is beyond beautiful.

Walter Van Beirendonck’s, Gareth Pugh’s & the Chanel Haute Couture corners are a must see.

Best part is, you get to take home a souvenir if you want.

It’ll cost you 60 euro, which is Britney ca 2007 cheap if you ask me.

You can choose between a Dirk Van Saene or a Walter Van Beirendonck design.

I love mine!
