THREE THINGS THAT MADE ME HAPPY RECENTLY
1. Seeing Flag live
A cliché question amongst music bores is ‘best festival line-up dead or alive’. Black Flag would always be on my list. Ideally, Keith Morris would sing most of the set and Henry Rollins would sing ‘My War’ with Kira on bass. FLAG, a reunited Black Flag without Greg Ginn, is as close to that fantasy as I’ll ever get. If you watch closely, you can see me (and my best friend next to me) getting stomped in the left corner of your screen.
The setlist:
This is one of my bruises the next day.
Unfortunatley, that was the least of it. The muscles on the right side of my neck got infected after being overly stressed at the gig, so I ended up in the emergency room at the hospital a few days later.
They fitted me with a neck brace … Read More »
NEW DAVID BOWIE ‘WHERE ARE WE NOW’ + full album ‘the next day’ on the way
You know what? This year is going to be different.
Stuff you’ve hoped for. Stuff that never happens. Stuff that matters. It’s happening now.
LET ME SING YOU MY DRUNK SONG: TERIUS ‘THE DREAM’ NASH
“Long Gone”, a shameless belter from “1997″, the free ‘internet album’ by Terius ‘The Dream’ Nash gets the video treatment. It’s mostly black and white posing with some girl and her cleavage. But it’s also a perfect excuse to profess my love for the entire album. The
PONPONPON WAYWAYWAY (‘EVERY DAY IS PON’)
Warning: the following video by Kyary Pamyu Pamyu includes laser skulls, puking eyeballs, morphed blobby heads, a faceless chubby stranger dancing in a dress, a royal duck, toys, lots of fonts and a chorus that goes something like: ‘pon pon ponponpon way way waywayway ponponpon waywayway ponponpon waywayway”.
CRATE FINDS: CLAUDINE LONGET – JEALOUS GUY / DON’T LET ME DOWN (MEDLEY)
There are certain things my family has to live with. One of those things that I imagine are included in the ‘or for worse’ clause of our (as yet unspoken) vows is my fascination for Claudine Longet.
STREAM THE NEW RADIOHEAD ALBUM “THE KING OF LIMBS”
The new Radiohead is not the smack in the face “In Rainbows” or “Kid A” turned out to be. It’s not a stadium-filler like “OK Computer”, either. What is it then? I dunno. A soundtrack for a fast ballooning head? Static fom the empty space inside your heart? I’m just guessing here.
KANYE WEST “POWER”
“Screams from the haters/got a nice ring to it/I guess every superhero need his theme music.”
NO MATTER HOW FAR WRONG YOU’VE GONE, YOU CAN ALWAYS TURN AROUND
Opinions differ on the new Scott-Heron album “I’m New Here”. I was talking to Theophilus London about it the day before his gig and he thought it was a hipster make-over of someone who didn’t need a make-over. I agree. But I also think we should be thankful for him being able to release matrial at all, kids discovering his music and you cannot deny there are some standout tracks to be cherished by fans and newbies alike. The title track is special to me because we’ve just moved house and I’m a sucker for ‘this-track-was-made-for-my-life-right-now-I-swear!’ moments.
LCD SOUNDSYTEM – ‘DRUNK GIRLS’ – VIDEO
James Murphy and gang being harrassed by people dressed as dogs. That’s the treatment. The review? Fun!
