Bon Iver “33 GOD"

Y’all haters may be corny with that Illuminati mess, but that will not stop Justin ‘Icon of Dance’ Vernon of Bon Iver from convoking Beëlzebub with this new lyric video for the song 33 “GOD”.

Featured on their upcoming, long-awaited album ’22, A Million’, the song builds on the new mystical Bon Iver era that we’ve caught a glimpse of in earlier releases ’22 (OVER SOON)’ and ’10 d E A T h b R E a s T’. The song originally contained vocals from friend and frequent collaborator Kanye West when it was performed live earlier this month at Eaux Claires Festival in Wisconsin and is clearly influenced by the pair’s previous work together. Kanye doesn’t seem to appear on this final release, but I’m hoping his feature was somehow saved for another track on the album.

The video is whir of lightning storms and spiritual folk religious symbolism through its artwork and lyrics. The title contains the number ’33’ and the video is 3:33 minutes long, which might refer to the numerical equivalent of the word ‘AMEN’ (1 + 13 + 5 + 14 = 33). Or to the date in 1933 president Roosevelt declared bankruptcy, according to this totally not-insane Illuminati theorist’s website.

The piano-driven, sample-laden song is Bon Iver magic as always and honestly, I’m beyond ready for this new era. I haven’t been the same since first hearing ‘RE: Stacks’ and ‘Woods’ as an angsty teen and seeing the band perform live was a transcendant experience. Everyone needs a Bon Iver moment at some point in their life so I’m excited for those who will experience their first with this upcoming release.

I too have found God that one time I got to stay at the Ace. Mainly because of their Junya Watanabe-esque patchwork denim bedding and quality vinyl selection.
