5 Quotes About the Meaning of Life with Kittin (f.k.a. Miss Kittin)

Electroclash pioneer Miss Kittin reclaims her original name ‘Kittin’ for her first full LP in five years, called ‘Cosmos’. The new music was inspired by a quiet, reflective stay in the French countryside after tour exhaustion, looking more inward and less towards the dance floor. There are no breaks in the album, flowing through different states of consciousness. Because ‘Cosmos’ was born from spiritual experiences rather than late night club tales, we asked Kittin if we could skip the usual questions and instead confront her with 5 quotes by current and iconic thinkers like Maggie Nelson, Sam Harris and Alan Watts that touch upon the underlying themes of the “Cosmos” album. The results are, of course, best read while keeping her signature accent in mind.

“Empirically speaking, we are made of star stuff. Why aren’t we talking more about that?” – Maggie Nelson

Kittin: Because it’s Human Nature to stay in the comfort zone, self-centered. It’s paradoxal, because being self-centered could bring you to self-analysis and therefore, wisdom, admitting we all come from somewhere, in the big picture.

“You are not controlling the storm, and you are not lost in it. You are the storm.” – Sam Harris

Kittin: I don’t think we are storms. We are living creatures constantly adapting to our environment. We can’t control it, but we are in charge of the drive through existence.

“Life is like music for its own sake. We are living in an eternal now, and when we listen to music we are not listening to the past, we are not listening to the future, we are listening to an expanded present.” – Alan Watts

Kittin: Nice one. Music is a universal language and like every other language you can only transmit the message if you are conscious, in the moment, of what you want to say. Notes, like words, have a purpose, it’s a big responsibility to use them.

“When you are on the dancefloor, there is nothing to do but dance.” – Umberto Eco

Kittin: That’s why I love clubs with no seats, no VIP areas, no champagne tables! The word “dance floor” definites what it is. A floor to dance.

“The secret to life is meaningless unless you discover it yourself.” – W. Somerset Maugham

Kittin: I love Somerset Maugham but it’s the kind of spiritual quote that ends up on tea cups, t-shirts and instagram pictures! I wish the meaning of life would be expressed more in actions and less in words...

‘Cosmos’ by Kittin is out now on Nobody’s Bizzness Records.
