Following icon Michèle Lamy’s “Lamyland” boxing gym installation (on view till March 23) as part of their dedicated “Year of Radical Luxury”, famed London store Selfridges has unveiled a new visual commission. In a hybrid documentary titled “The Greatest Luxury”, director Kathryn Ferguson got singular artist Mykki Blanco and designer Gareth Pugh as well as choreographer Holly Blakey to reflect on what luxury means to them.

The film, part of Selfridges’ “Hot Air” broadcasting channel, takes aim at luxury through the eyes of radical creatives to flesh out – in a standout way – how they connect with the concept of luxury both personally and emotionally. Is it material or intangible?

In the short film, Blanco muses about the feelings he experienced standing on top of the divine Mount Etna and the sensuality of cashmere skivvies while Pugh takes a more philosophical approach to the concept of time out as luxury. Meanwhile, Holly Blakey sounds off on the joy of purchasing your own pair of shoes. Throughout, a poem is recited by its author, Lily Ashley.

It gets you thinking. That you immediately need to recreate the staircase drama Mykki Blanco was serving, yes. But also: what is truly luxurious?
