Photographer Mous Lamrabat Unveils Solo Show 'Mousganistan'

Moroccan-born, Belgian-based imagemaker Mous Lamrabat is ready for you to peek into his world now. Creating a name and fan following for himself as a photographer after completing an interior design education, Lamrabat is known to effortlessly fuse elements from his own youth, cultures and traditions with tongue-in-cheek commentary on globalism and logo-manic fashion culture. Having grown up in the city of Sint-Niklaas, his hometown will host the ‘Mousganistan’ solo show from January 31 until March 24 2019.

‘Mousganistan’ explores the intimacy of home as well as the public persona and the societal projection of self. Luxury brands, logos, global fast food chains, sneaker culture, flash cars are placed within a context Western eyes have been conditioned not to expect them and re-appropriated with a touch of surrealist symbolism. Traditional dress icons such as the djellaba are re-contextualized through the lens of contemporary streetwear and high fashion, both real and counterfeit. Figures fully or partially draped in veils often made from brightly-hued synthetic fabrics unite concepts of religiosity and fashion. Using humour as a constructive base, the veiled figures that often populate his work both signal and mask an unapologetic sense of identity. Don’t miss this!
