Rico Nasty Annexes Hyperpop in "iPhone"
Hyperpop is expanding its borders, swallowing up more and more mainstream music territory. It’s not just the rising popularity of Hyperpop mainstays like Charli XCX, 100 gecs, Kim Petras or Slayyyter. There are localised breaches happening through other artists as well. Artists like Frank Ocean, Arca or Rico Nasty for example have always defied genre categories and it makes sense Hyperpop is becoming part of their creative arsenal, pushing further into the future. The newest Rico Nasty track “iPhone” is all-out hyper: her voice is auto-tuned to the point of breaking, the chorus is made for shouting along with total abandon and the beats (produced by 100 gecs - Dylan Brady) are designed to break your speakers and be proud of it. The video also embraces the hyper-slick, hyper-controlled aesthetics, featuring Rico as her Tacobella persona and using 3D and candy-flavoured colours to induce that sweet, sweet brain-freeze of the perfect pop song distilled and refined to hallucinatory levels.
From “Nightmare Vacation”, out soon.
