The Most Podcast - Episode 39: Quinsy Gario

Award-winning performance poet, writer, visual artist & anti-racism activist Quinsy Gario visits Dominique Nzeyimana in the loft. On this vital episode, Quinsy calls himself ‘just a guy with a smile who had a T-shirt on’, but host Dominique Nzeyimana is quick to promptly give him all his flowers, as there’s no way to overstate the impact Quinsy’s body of work has had. His most well-known art project, ‘Zwarte Piet Is Racisme’ – Black Pete is Racism – first took on the racist figure of Zwarte Piet in 2011, bringing about a total culture shift in the Lowlands. In this new conversation, hear Quinsy Gario share his Sint-Maarten memories, community service beginnings and first harnessing of poetry. Quinsy also talks academia, his recent performances at Beursschouwburg, how everything is a teachable moment, the importance of archiving local Black history and becoming an artist-politician (while being neither and both at the same time).

All with that infectious (up there with Eddy Murphy and Elmo according to Dominique) deep Quinsy Gario laugh peppered in between.
