Caroline Polachek - True Love Waits (Live Radiohead Cover)
Even within the impressively melancholy canon of Radiohead, the song “True Love Waits” is a credible contender for the title of ‘most harrowing tune’. Since the mid-nineties, this song has been a fan favourite during live performances and a sought-after b-side rarity. It wasn’t until their latest masterpiece 'A Moon Shaped Pool’ that the band officially released a ‘complete’ studio version. The lyrics remain a mystery to this day, although Thom has gone on record saying that part of it was inspired by a news story about a child being left at home by their parents, locked inside the house with packets of lollipops and crisps to survive while mum and dad flew off on vacation. Fans have often speculated about the timing of the ‘final version’ release, as the song is emotionally soaked in the fear of being abandoned and the ‘official’ version was only released after the death of Thom’s ex-partner Rachel in 2016 (they were together for more than 20 years and separated in 2015). Caroline Polachek stays close to the original, adding an extra layer to the lore with a stripped-down live performance in front of the infamous Monet water lily series. Fun fact (although “fun” is debatable here): the original French title of the series is Nymphéas, not just the scientific name of the lily, but also a reference to the myth that these flowers were ‘born' from a water nymph who died pining for the love of an unreachable deity. Monet was famously cagey about releasing the series, continually re-working them in private and only sanctioning a ‘complete’ version upon his death.
