James Ellis Ford could have stuffed his solo WARP record to the gills with the big fishes he’s worked with as a producer and songsmith (Gorillaz, Jessie Ware, Depeche Mode, etc. …). But instead, “The Hum” plays it close to the chest and the energy and void that you’ll find there if you just remain still long enough to listen. The new single and video “The Yips” stays nicely in the pocket and focuses on the feeling of being in the studio with an artist letting the sounds and flow of inspiration show everyone the way. A nice reminder that the void is not always for falling into. Sometimes you can hum along to it, too.
