“Wonderland” by Akay & Olabo at MIMA

“Wonderland” by Akay & Olabo at MIMA

Following their outstanding “Art Is Comic” expo, Brussels visual arts museum MIMA swoops into quite a different direction for the next show. Titled “Wonderland” and created by Swedish protest ideology artists Akay & Olabo, this new exhibition follows the two artists on their illicit city explorations, as they delve into abandoned spots and no-go areas.

Starting out as graffiti artists in Sweden, the pair is known for their multidisciplinary, humorous and curious work. They turn the most derelict scene into a place of funny wonder, using only what seems to be utter junk. The duo wants to elicit civil disobedience through art and poetry, also pushing the "Wonderland" visitor to scramble through all kinds of hurdles to get to the actual pieces. It's an introduction to "indoor street art" (creating art spaces in dilapidated buildings), of which they are the masters. This should be good.

MIMA has also announced the addition of new works to their permanent collection, which will be on view on the second and third floor during the "Wonderland" expo. Art by inspiring names like Mark Gonzales, Brecht Vandenbroucke, 2SHY, Jean Jullien, Bonom and more have been added to the roster.
