Even though Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy is a a character played by Will Oldham, the lines are often blurred and “In Good Faith” is a fine example of this. The song was first released (in a slightly different form) in 2017 by Will Oldham under his own name, explicitly as a reaction to the 2016 USA elections. The video for this new version contains footage from a real Timothy Morton documentary about something called the “Sacred Harp Singers”, a community of very diverse people who come together to sing a capella songs of faith. But spliced in between the actual singers is a guy called “Will”, from Kentucky. Yep. Will Oldham himself. The origins of the song can be traced back to political turmoil, but the video explicitly shifts it towards the spiritual plane. Anyway, even if you’re not into all this shapeshifting stuff, the song itself is beautiful, tender and warm.
