A truly rare opportunity for a firsthand experience with a living figurehead of black scholarship, activism and social emancipation is headed your way. “Moving Together: Activism, Art and Education – A Week with Angela Davis” is an upcoming programme held from May 12-17 at different Amsterdam institutions and community centres. Professor Angela Yvonne Davis will come together with other scholars, artists, activists and even the audience members to tackle hard-hitting questions of activism across generations, artistic practices, citizenship and the sharing of knowledge. Next to public events, there will be workshops, discussions, film screenings and meetings to attend all over Amsterdam. This is exciting.
Curated by the singular independent curator Amal Alhaag, artist and performance poet Quinsy Gario, Nadia Bekkers, Mikki Stelder and Bojana Mladenović, the programme aims to connect social, educational, heritage and cultural initiatives to talk social justice, equality, black scholarship, activism and art as well as share the emancipatory practices they can create with the public at large. Conversations on refugee, feminist, queer, trans, anti-racist, anti-nationalist, prison abolition, anti-border and environmental justice struggles will be amplified to reinforce the connection between art, activism and education. The central thread running throughout is the work of Professor Angela Davis, who embodies the value of interdisciplinary and intersectional practices of liberation through her legacy. Her work as a scholar, activist and educator has always focused on the creation of communities of struggle for economic, gender, racial and sexual progress and justice.
