German film director, writer and producer Reiner Holzemer has handed us all a priceless gift: the acclaimed new Martin Margiela documentary ‘Martin Margiela: In His Own Words’.
Talking to Dominique Nzeyimana for The Most podcast, the esteemed filmmaker shares how he set out to make a documentary on someone so influential so few people know anything about. The result is 1,5 years of work poured into 1,5 hours of intimate musings & earliest recollections narrated by the Belgian fashion myth himself. As a result, ‘Martin Margiela: In His Own Words’ whip-stitches the meteoric rise as well as the moments of financial setback and long-lingering hurt shouldered by the designer. Holzemer discusses the process of having Margiela with him every step of the way and selecting talking heads together; picking true eye-witnesses that were in the fray with Martin at the time – both close confidants, muses, team members, friends and mentors like Jean-Paul Gaultier, Carine Roitfeld, Sandrine Dumas, Kristina De Coninck, Nina Nitsche and critics like Cathy Horyn. Reiner also discusses how he created his own editing system and he recounts the joyous experience of working with Belgian rock pantheon mainstays dEUS on the musical direction and soundtrack.
