How is filming the back of a person’s ear visceral enough to be instantly recognisable as a signature visual? Best not try to explain, or even understand. This reminds me of one of the best pieces of advice my father once gave me. He was talking about a contemporary dance performance he had gone out to see and how he was frustrated with his friends afterwards, who insisted on talking what the dance had ‘meant’. My father said: “Why this need to explain everything? Why not let things be what they are sometimes and experience them as that?” He said it casually, an answer to “So what have you been up to?” but it grows in my mind still.
“I Saw Light” by Kae Tempest is taken from “The Line Is A Curve” and features Grian Chatten (of Fontaines D.C.) and was filmed and directed by Wolfang Tillmans.
