You’ve seen it flash across your timeline, you’ve screamed because it’s so perfect and now you want the T: Walter Van Beirendonck and Ikea have melded forces and will be launching a homeware collection, the first of its kind for the Swedes, available as from June 1st.
The line's name has been Ikea-fied to "Glödande" ('glowing') and will feature rugs, bed linen, online customisable 3D figurines, storage boxes, tableware, wallpaper, T-shirts and even washi tape to mask the tears of joy you will be staining your place with. Pricing starts around €3,99 and the 'Kwade Tijger' rug (my personal fave) will be rung up for no more than €59,95.
The gang of characters whose name is sprawled across the designs, are the cloud-creatures called WONDERMOOI. There’s a beautiful narrative, even a poem, behind this collection which parents strapped for a bedtime story will be sure to appreciate: the WONDERMOOI are suddenly faced with holes appearing in their cloud and want to stop the wars they can see on earth below by spreading cloud dust. Ikea plans to continue their fashion collaborations and a line with London designer Kit Neale is already being developed. (What was Yeezus/Pablo doing at Ikea HQ though?)
This collection just makes me smile because it's going to breathe all this Walter life into millions of homes and that's a beautiful thing. When I first learned how to scribble my name, it was on an Ikea bed (sorry mother). My sister’s 6th grade secret diary was stuck to the back of a BILLY (sorry girl, I found it). So I just can’t wait for the next gen of kids to grow up with these pieces. Get grape juice on my Kwade Tijger and you're on your own, though.
Walter Van Beirendonck x Ikea launches June 7, 2016 in Ikea stores worldwide and on ikea.com.
