World Aids Day on December 1 also marks the 28th anniversary of the Day With(out) Art, the annual event that aims to raise HIV/AIDS awareness and inspire action through dedicated art and museum projects. On Friday December 1, Visual AIDS - a U.S. non-profit organisation using art to fight HIV/AIDS and support the work of HIV+ artists - will start screening a global video programme titled “Alternate Endings, Radical Beginnings".
This project curated by Visual AIDS emphasises the underrepresented black narratives within the HIV/AIDS epidemic by commissioning 7 new video shorts from artists like the unstoppable Mykki Blanco and peers Kia LaBeija (the awe-inspiring voguing performance artist), Reina Gossett (who created the important short film “Happy Birthday, Marsha!”), Brontez Purnell, Tiona Nekkia McClodden, Cheryl Dunye + Ellen Spiro and Thomas Allen Harris.
Marquee screenings in the U.S. include the Whitney Museum of American Art (NYC), Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and Los Angeles and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. All of these venues will be hosting talks with the artists and curators of this project.
Over 100 partnered institutions internationally will be hosting screenings of “Alternate Endings, Radical Beginnings” on December 1 or during the following days. You’ll be able to join the project in cities like Berlin, Paris, Madrid, Manchester, London and Tokyo too.
And so the fight continues.
