The video for the inimitable Mykki Blanco’s “Hideaway”, directed by Daisy Zhou (“How To Be a Black Panther”), has dropped and it’s so important.
Made in collaboration with W Magazine (shout-out to W’s long-time style director Edward Enninful on the historic British Vogue EIC appointment!) and amfAR in honour of National Youth HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, the video sees a despondent lover fall to pieces in her room while Mykki shadows her in a couture gown. It symbolises the effect the HIV stigma can have on a relationship.
In an interview last year, Mykki Blanco crowned “Hideaway” as a personal favourite on the “Mykki” album, describing the song as “hard-core but also blatantly queer”. The video is accompanied by a candid interview that delves into the damage HIV stigmatisation can cause, as well as what we can do to keep the fight alive through grassroots activism.
