When the Dries Van Noten documentary was first announced, simply titled "Dries", a little involuntary shriek escaped me. If you remember from our 2015 encounter, hearing Dries Van Noten speak about his craft is a cerebral experience laced with the most inspiring references and oodles upon oodles of flawless taste. Imagine 90 minutes of that. On March 31, the Reiner Holzemer-directed documentary will premiere at Bozar Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels in the presence of the designer and director.
This is the first time in Dries Van Noten’s career - which spans over 25 years and will be crowned with its 100th show at Paris Fashion Week on March 1 - that a feature-length documentary will chronicle the Antwerp Six legend’s work and home life. The film will show a year in the normally quite camera-averse designer’s life, and the four collections from SS15 to SS16 Team Van Noten worked on in that span of time. The trailer reveals a closer look at Van Noten’s fabric selection, his views on the meaning of fashion, an interview with the grand Iris Apfel, a touching backstage moment with partner Patrick Vangheluwe and a feisty cameo by Dries’ Airedale terrier Harry.
German-born director Reiner Holzemer has developed and produced over 30 films since 1983, mainly focusing on artist portraits. You can watch his 2011 portrait of the masterful Juergen Teller here, if your German is up to scratch. After the excellent ‘Dior and I’ portrait of Raf Simons debuting at Dior, this film is a most welcome deep dive into the inner sanctum of one of our nation’s fashion treasures. Another involuntary shriek will be emanating from yours truly’s seat, that I can predict with certainty.
